La Paz, BCS – This Monday, August 11, 2025, workers from the Baja California Sur Health Secretariat (SSaBCS) formally submitted a petition to the state government, with demands aimed at improving working conditions, social benefits, and the equipment of medical units. The event was carried out peacefully and orderly, in a context where the health sector is facing significant challenges in both resources and service coverage.

The delegation of workers was received by representatives of the state administration. Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío stated that the document will be reviewed and that a "responsible response" will be given, recognizing the work of doctors, nurses, and administrative staff as "the soul of health institutions."

What is a petition and what does it include?

A list of demands is a formal document containing a set of requests, generally related to labor rights, improved working conditions, salary increases, or the provision of resources. Although the exact content of the document presented this Monday has not been made public in its entirety, union sources indicate that it includes:

  • Salary increase in line with inflation and the cost of living in the state.

  • Improvements in benefits such as bonuses, insurance, and access to wellness programs.

  • Supply of medical supplies in hospitals and health centers.

  • Professional training and updating for operational staff.

  • Review of temporary contracts and their possible basis.

Context: a system under pressure

The submission of the document comes at a time when the Southern California health system is facing pressures from increased demand for services, a shortage of specialized personnel, and the need for modern infrastructure. In rural and remote communities, the lack of doctors, nurses, and basic equipment has been a recurring concern.

Healthcare workers have noted that, although progress has been made in recent years, the distribution of resources remains uneven, and work overload directly affects the quality of care.

Relevance to citizens

The state of working conditions for healthcare workers is not a matter exclusively for the profession: it directly impacts the quality of service received by the population .

  • Better salaries and benefits help retain talent and attract skilled professionals.

  • Sufficient equipment and supplies ensure that patients receive timely and safe care.

  • Ongoing training keeps staff up to date to face challenges such as new diseases or health emergencies.

In a region like Baja California Sur, where geographic dispersion complicates medical care, improving the conditions of healthcare personnel translates into more efficient service, with shorter wait times and better coverage.

What follows

The state government will have to analyze the requests and establish a dialogue table with worker representatives. This process will determine not only the resolution of the demands, but also the possibility of avoiding labor disputes that could disrupt health services.

In the words of Governor Castro Cosío:

"Our commitment is to address the legitimate needs of those who care for the health of Southern Californians. They are the lifeblood of our institutions, and their well-being is essential for the system to function."

Meanwhile, the public will be closely watching the negotiations unfold, aware that the outcome will impact the quality and timeliness of the medical care they receive on a daily basis.
