The concession was formally approved by the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) on May 7, 2025

La Paz, BCS – Wednesday, August 13, 2025. The Autonomous University of Baja California Sur (UABCS) marked a milestone in public broadcasting today with the acquisition of XHEBCS-FM 99.9 MHz. This allows the university to broadcast its programs on FM, complementing its existing AM frequency (XEUBS-AM 1180 kHz).
The concession was formally approved by the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) on May 7, 2025, and transferred from the state government to UABCS. The FM channel is set to offer cultural, academic, and community content continuously, while the AM frequency will continue broadcasting during its current scheduled hours.
Why This Matters for BCS Residents
Better coverage and sound qualityFM broadcast offers improved audio clarity and better reach in vehicles and mobile devices, especially in areas where AM reception was poor due to interference or building density.
Expanded access to university contentRadio UABCS is a key platform for scientific, cultural, and academic outreach. The FM signal allows it to reach a broader audience including students, families, educators, and residents across La Paz.
Strengthening local identityA publicly accessible university media outlet promotes cultural engagement, announcements, and community dialogue—reinforcing regional identity and civic participation.
Round-the-clock programming for wider audiencesThe new 24/7 FM signal targets audiences who prefer late-night or early-morning listening opportunities not covered by the 8 a.m.–8 p.m. AM schedule.
UABCS is now setting up the technical and programming structure required for FM operations. This includes content planning, transmission infrastructure, and an outreach campaign to introduce the new frequency.
The university intends to use this platform to broaden its educational, cultural, and community-based programming—making it more inclusive and accessible across the state.
The launch of Radio UABCS on FM is a significant enhancement for cultural and educational broadcasting in La Paz. It widens access to enriching content and reinforces the university’s role in public life.
At BajaSur360, we’ll continue tracking this transition, because more and better access to information strengthens our community.
