Compared to the same period in 2024, Baja California Sur shows a 7.2% increase in formal jobs.

La Paz, BCS – August 5, 2025. Between January and June 2025, Baja California Sur registered the creation of 9,832 formal jobs , according to recent data from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) . This figure places the state among the entities with the greatest employment dynamism in the country during the first half of the year, maintaining a sustained positive trend since the post-pandemic economic recovery.
The most dynamic sectors in job creation have been tourism , construction , trade , professional services , and the growing information technology segment . The expansion of tourism projects, real estate developments, and the attraction of foreign investment in areas such as Los Cabos , La Paz , and Loreto have been key drivers of this growth.
Sustained and strategic growth
Since the beginning of the current state administration, one of the objectives has been to strengthen formal employment, with a focus on sustainability, inclusion, and balanced regional development. According to the state Secretariat of Labor and Social Development, this growth not only reflects positive figures but also a change in the quality of employment : more positions with social security, job stability, and access to benefits.
Compared to the same period in 2024, Baja California Sur shows a 7.2% increase in formal jobs registered with the IMSS , above the national average of 5.6%.
The sectors that employ the most in BCS
Tourism and hospitality : The reopening of international routes, the arrival of cruise ships, and the consolidation of destinations such as Los Cabos and La Paz have increased the demand for staff in hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, and tourist transportation.
Construction and real estate : New housing developments, hotels, private hospitals, and shopping centers in Los Cabos, El Centenario, and Todos Santos have boosted employment in this sector.
Commerce : Population growth in the southern part of the state has brought with it an increase in supermarkets, convenience stores, pharmacies and distribution centers.
Professional services : Accounting, technology, education, and legal consulting have seen an upswing, especially due to the growth of small, formal businesses.
Technology : The arrival of startups and digital support centers in La Paz and Los Cabos has opened up opportunities for young professionals in areas such as technical support, digital marketing, and software development.
Direct impact on Southern Californians
More formal jobs mean greater access to social security, housing, retirement savings, and health services . They also represent economic stability for families and a more favorable environment for consumption and community development.
For young workers, this growth offers better opportunities to enter the labor market without having to migrate outside the state. At the same time, sectors such as construction and tourism have opened up more opportunities for women, older adults, and people with practical experience.
Challenges still present
Although the figures are encouraging, there are also challenges:
The concentration of employment in tourist areas can leave rural or isolated communities with less access to opportunities.
Many contracts, although formal, remain temporary or low-paying.
Policies for job mobility, technical training, and equitable access to employment for people with disabilities or without professional qualifications need to be strengthened.
The creation of nearly 10,000 formal jobs in the first six months of 2025 is a clear sign that Baja California Sur continues to consolidate its economic growth. The key will be to maintain this pace, diversify sources of employment, and ensure that job development benefits everyone equally.
At BajaSur360, we will continue to report and analyze the evolution of employment, the economy, and quality of life in our state.
