UABCS launches marine citizen science program

The project is supported by the Interdisciplinary Center for Marine Sciences (CICIMAR) and has initial funding from the Packard Foundation .



The Autonomous University of Baja California Sur (UABCS) has announced an innovative citizen science program to monitor the health of marine ecosystems in the Gulf of California .


The project, called "Living Ocean ," invites recreational divers, fishermen, and tourists to collaborate in collecting data on coral reefs, key species, and water quality. According to Dr. Javier Alvarado , program coordinator, citizen participation will expand the scope of scientific research and raise public awareness about the importance of conserving marine resources.


Participants will receive basic training and use mobile applications to report their observations.

The results will be published on a public portal and will serve as a basis for conservation policies.
