The Baja California Sur State Congress approved a reform that seeks to strengthen citizen participation in decision-making related to the environment.

La Paz, Baja California Sur – The Baja California Sur State Congress approved a reform seeking to strengthen citizen participation in environmental decision-making. The initiative, presented by the Ecology Commission , establishes mechanisms for civil society to participate in the development of environmental public policies.
The reform contemplates the creation of citizen councils in each municipality, composed of representatives of non-governmental organizations, academics, and citizens interested in protecting the natural environment.
These councils will have the power to issue opinions and make proposals on projects that could affect the environment, such as tourism developments, infrastructure projects, and extractive activities.
Furthermore, public consultations are required before approving projects with significant environmental impact. These consultations must be transparent and guarantee the effective participation of local communities.
Representative María López, president of the Ecology Commission, emphasized that this reform is an important step toward more inclusive and democratic environmental governance.
"We want decisions about our environment to be made with the participation of those who live in it and know it ," he said.
Environmental organizations have welcomed the reform's approval, although they warn that its success will depend on its effective implementation and the authorities' commitment to listening to and considering citizens' voices.
