La Paz , July 18, 2025 — Last June became the most violent period of the year in Baja California Sur, with 25 intentional homicides , a figure that represents 41% of the violent deaths recorded in the first half of the year (total: 61), according to the report of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC).
Faced with this alarming increase—which included eight deaths in a single day over a busy weekend in municipalities such as La Paz , Comondú , and Loreto —state authorities launched Operation Safe Summer 2025 , designed to strengthen surveillance on beaches, urban centers, highways, and tourist areas. The plan will be in effect from July 14 to August 31 , with full coordination between SEDENA, SEMAR, the National Guard, and state and municipal police.
Details of the black month
June accounted for 41% of the total homicides in the first half of the year - 25 of 61 - placing BCS as the fifth entity with the lowest national rate, but with an alarming monthly increase.
The most violent day took place on June 21 , with several simultaneous clashes and homicides in different municipalities.
Safe Summer Operation
The program, led by Governor Víctor Castro Cosío, includes:
Active presence in tourist areas, beaches, shopping centers and highways.
Joint forces deployed in the five municipalities (La Paz, Los Cabos, Comondú, Loreto, Mulegé).
Combined coverage : land and sea patrols, as well as strategic surveillance in areas of greatest incidence
The governor insisted that the goal is to offer a "quiet summer" and maintain good weather for residents and visitors, despite the increase in crime.
Citizenship and perception of security
Even with these operations, tension persists:
Recently, narco-banners were found in La Paz and Comondú, and clandestine airstrips containing weapons, drugs, and illicit drugs were dismantled.
Despite this, some studies, such as the National Survey of Urban Public Security (ENSU), place Baja California Sur in first place nationwide in perception of security , with 33.4% of the population expressing feeling safe.
June marked a turning point in security, with a worrying increase in homicides in a short period of time. The implementation of Operation Safe Summer reflects a strong and coordinated institutional response. However, peace remains to be consolidated through sustainable actions that strengthen prevention, police intelligence, and citizen trust.
