A team of students from the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur has won the national technological innovation award thanks to a marine drone designed to monitor coastal ecosystems.
The prototype, developed by environmental engineering and mechatronics students, can record temperatures, salinity levels, and the presence of microplastics in real time, transmitting data to a web platform.
The drone was tested in La Paz Bay with excellent results, according to CIBNOR researchers .
"Our goal is for this tool to help scientists and environmental authorities make more informed decisions," Luis Martínez, leader of the student team, explained to BajaSur360 .
The project has sparked interest from international organizations and NGOs like Oceana, which are already exploring partnerships.
The rector of UABCS congratulated the students, emphasizing that "homegrown science has global potential . "
Currently, the young people are seeking public and private funding to scale up production, with the goal of selling their drones to research institutions and environmental NGOs in Mexico and Latin America.
