Baja California Sur consolidates its leadership in the national fishing sector, positioning itself at the forefront of giant squid capture. The state has reached a production volume nearing 20,000 tons, a figure that not only stands out statistically but also translates into a vital economic benefit for thousands of Sudcalifornian families. This activity is a fundamental pillar of the regional economy.

The current fishing season for this valuable marine resource is in full swing, showing remarkable dynamism. The main area of operation is concentrated in the fishing corridor stretching from Mulegé to Santa Rosalía. It is in this region that the mid-sized fleet and smaller vessels dedicate their efforts to squid extraction, generating intense economic activity.

The information was confirmed by José Alfredo Bermúdez, head of the Secretariat of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Agricultural Development (SEPUI). The secretary emphasized that this season has been particularly positive, achieving a capture volume that reaffirms the state as the number one producer of this species in all of Mexico. The positive impact is felt directly in the coastal communities.

Bermúdez detailed that the fishing fleet dedicated to this species is currently active and operating with good yields. This activity not only generates direct jobs for the fishermen who go to sea but also creates a robust chain of indirect jobs on land. These jobs include processing, logistics, and support services for the vessels.

The product caught in Sudcalifornian waters is of high quality, which has allowed it to conquer very demanding international markets. A significant portion of the giant squid is processed in local plants. From Baja California Sur, this product is exported to various destinations, mainly to countries on the Asian continent, as well as to markets in Europe and the United States.

The State Government, through SEPUI, has played a crucial role in this success. A clear focus has been maintained on promoting and supporting fishing activity, but always within a strict legal framework. The goal is to ensure that the exploitation of the resource is orderly and, above all, sustainable in the long term.

Under the instructions of Governor Víctor Villalobos, work has been done in close collaboration with federal authorities. This inter-institutional coordination is key to maintaining order in the sector. The aim is for the economic benefits of fishing to reach those dedicated to this work fairly, always promoting respect for current regulations.

One of the most important strategic alliances is maintained with the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (CONAPESCA). Alongside this federal agency, constant inspection and surveillance tasks are carried out. These actions are fundamental to ensuring that all vessels operate with the corresponding permits and within the bounds of the law.

The main focus of this joint surveillance is respect for fishing bans and minimum catch sizes. These regulations are not arbitrary; they are scientifically designed to protect the reproductive cycles of marine species. Respecting them is the only guarantee that the resource will not be overexploited and can continue to be harvested in future seasons.

In summary, Baja California Sur's leadership in giant squid fishing is a reflection of a successful strategy. By combining the efforts of the productive sector with a framework of legality and sustainability promoted by the government, not only is the current economic benefit ensured, but also the viability of the resource for future generations.
