The Baja California Sur Congress approved a reform to the state's Penal Code that raises the minimum age for statutory rape from 12 to 15 years.
This amendment seeks to strengthen the protection of minors against sexual abuse, establishing that any sexual relationship with minors under 15 years of age, even with their consent, will be considered rape.
The initiative was supported by various human rights organizations and seeks to harmonize state legislation with international child protection standards.
The reform will come into force after its publication in the Official Gazette of the State Government.
