Los Cabos, BCS | August 6, 2025 —The closure of several drinking water wells in the community of El Migriño , north of Cabo San Lucas, has set off alarm bells among authorities and residents. Thousands of families in the rural and peripheral areas of Los Cabos could be left without regular access to water if the decision taken by the state delegation of the National Water Commission ( Conagua ) is not reversed.
Local representative Sergio Huerta Leggs made an urgent call to the Conagua delegate in Baja California Sur, Julio Villarreal , to reconsider the closure, arguing that the decision was made without an immediate alternative supply and in the middle of the extreme heat season.
"Closing the wells without planning how families will be supplied is irresponsible. This water isn't for industrial use; it's for survival," the legislator declared at a press conference.
What's happening in El Migriño?
The closed wells supplied daily water to tanker trucks that delivered water to neighborhoods and ranches without a municipal water system . Among the affected areas are rural communities in Cabo San Lucas that rely exclusively on this resource for human consumption and basic activities.
Residents, truck drivers, and representatives of rural areas have expressed concern about the lack of dialogue with federal authorities and warned that they could organize social protests if the problem is not resolved in the coming days.
