La Paz, BCS | August 6, 2025 —With the goal of strengthening the regional economy and ensuring sustainable development, the Baja California Sur State Government has launched a new series of actions to boost aquaculture activity , especially in rural and coastal areas.

This is a strategy coordinated by the Secretariat of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Agricultural Development (SEPADA), which seeks to integrate South Californian seafood products into the local and national markets , while protecting the income of small producers .

"We want aquaculture with a social purpose, one that benefits both producers and consumers," said the head of SEPADA during the program's announcement.

What does the plan include?

  • Technical and legal advice for new aquaculture projects.

  • Access to financing for equipment and expansion.

  • Establishment of direct marketing points .

  • Support in health certifications for export.

  • Links with local restaurant and tourism chains.

The main focus is on ensuring that producers not only grow mollusks, fish, or shrimp, but also have the tools to sell better, at fair prices and without abusive intermediaries .

BCS: growing aquaculture potential

Baja California Sur has more than 2,230 kilometers of coastline and a strong fishing tradition. However, many cooperatives and aquaculture production units face barriers to accessing financing, logistics, and markets .

This new state initiative seeks to turn this disadvantage into an opportunity by promoting innovation, collective work, and food sovereignty.

Why does it matter?

  • Local aquaculture = circular economy: The money stays in the region.

  • Better access to seafood proteins: At affordable prices in urban and rural areas.

  • Smaller environmental footprint: Promotes sustainable and responsible practices.

At BajaSur360 , we'll keep you informed about the progress of this program and the testimonials of producers who are already seeing the benefits of this new initiative.
