This target represents a 35% reduction from current emissions levels of 758 million tons per year.

Mexico City. The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) has announced an ambitious update to the National Climate Change Strategy , with the goal of reducing carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by 140 million tons by 2030.
This target represents a 35% reduction from current emissions levels of 758 million tons per year.
The head of Semarnat, Alicia Bárcena , explained that the strategy includes renewable energy projects, reforestation, circular economy initiatives, and the decarbonization of the electrical system.
The main sectors identified as sources of emissions are transportation, energy, and agriculture. To address these challenges, clean technologies, energy efficiency, and sustainable agricultural practices will be promoted.
In addition, work will be done to restore 100,000 hectares of forests and 80,000 hectares of mangroves, with the goal of strengthening natural carbon sinks and protecting biodiversity.
Bárcena also proposed converting waste into energy sources, inspired by successful practices implemented in countries like Denmark.
This strategy is part of Mexico 's commitments under the Paris Agreement and will be presented at the upcoming 2025 Climate Change Conference in Brazil.
Semarnat emphasizes the need for continuous and adaptive action in the face of the global climate crisis and calls for collaboration between the public, private, and civil society sectors to achieve the established goals .
