La Paz, BCS — August 5, 2025. The combination of an active tropical wave and a low-pressure zone in the Mexican Pacific has generated extreme weather conditions in much of the state of Baja California Sur . State and federal authorities have issued a precautionary alert due to the significant increase in temperature and the possibility of heavy rains in various regions, especially in the southern and central municipalities of the state.

According to the National Meteorological Service (SMN), maximum temperatures of between 40°C and 45°C are forecast , particularly in areas such as La Paz, Comondú and Los Cabos , as well as an increase in relative humidity that could raise the thermal sensation to even more dangerous levels.

At the same time, the cloud bands associated with Tropical Wave 20 will bring heavy, intermittent rains , some accompanied by lightning and gusty winds. While the precipitation is welcome in the context of prolonged drought, sudden temperature changes and intense rainfall in short periods could cause flooding, landslides, and flash floods in streams .

Heat wave: recommendations for the population

The Baja California Sur Health Secretariat has issued a series of recommendations to prevent heat exhaustion, dehydration, and respiratory illnesses :

  • Avoid direct sun exposure between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

  • Stay hydrated at all times, even if you don't feel thirsty.

  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and protect your head with a hat or cap.

  • Avoid strenuous outdoor physical activities.

  • Do not leave children, elderly people or pets inside parked vehicles.

  • Eat fresh foods and avoid heavy meals.

Health centers across the state remain on alert to address potential heat-related emergencies.

Rain: Flood and service outage alert

The State Civil Protection Directorate reported that the municipalities most at risk of heavy rainfall are La Paz, Los Cabos, and Mulegé , where monitoring brigades have already been deployed in high-risk areas, especially in settlements near streams, hills, and poorly drained areas.

In previous years, similar conditions have caused damage to road infrastructure , fallen trees, power outages, and damage to homes. Therefore, authorities recommend that residents check roofs, secure loose objects, and keep nearby storm drains clean .

The State Civil Protection System is in communication with municipal authorities to activate temporary shelters if necessary.

Weather monitoring and prevention

According to forecast models, extreme conditions could extend throughout the week , depending on the development of the low-pressure system. The National Water Commission (Conagua) is closely monitoring the phenomenon and recommends checking its bulletins and updated maps daily.

If the system continues on its current path, it is expected to become a tropical storm off the coast of Sinaloa , with indirect impacts on southern Baja California Sur.

This week's weather calls for prevention and community attention . While extreme heat poses a direct risk to public health, the rains can become a challenge for infrastructure and mobility. Coordination between citizens and authorities will be key to mitigating the effects of this phenomenon.

BajaSur360 will continue to provide timely and accurate reporting on weather conditions in the state.
