TOKYO, JAPAN. – Mexican sports, and especially those of Baja California Sur, are celebrating. Race walker Alegna González, originally from Ojinaga, Chihuahua, but athletically forged in La Paz, Baja California Sur, made history this Friday by winning the silver medal in the 20-kilometer race walk at the Tokyo 2025 World Athletics Championships, consolidating her position as one of the best in the world in her discipline.

In a grueling competition, marked by the heat and humidity of the Japanese capital, González demonstrated a flawless strategy and enormous physical and mental strength. She stayed in the leading group throughout the race and in the final kilometer launched a blistering attack that allowed her to secure second place, stopping the clock at 1:24:50, just seconds behind the winner.

This result is the culmination of a long process of work and sacrifice for the athlete, who moved to La Paz during her junior years to train under the guidance of renowned coach Ignacio Zamudio. It was on the tracks of the Sudcaliforniano Sports Institute (INSUDE) that Alegna polished her technique and began to stand out at national and international levels, representing the state in multiple competitions.

Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío expressed his congratulations through his social media: "The effort and discipline of Alegna González are a source of pride for Baja California Sur and for all of Mexico. She is an example for our youth that with dedication, the greatest dreams can be achieved. Congratulations, champion!" INSUDE also celebrated the achievement, recalling the support provided to the athlete throughout her career.

Alegna González's silver medal is not only a personal triumph but a reflection of the potential of sports in Baja California Sur. Her success highlights the importance of investing in the development of high-performance athletes and sports infrastructure, a line of action that the state government has sought to strengthen so that more young talents can follow in the footsteps of the new world silver medalist.
