The Baja California Sur State Congress has introduced a new initiative to strengthen the protection of key natural areas in the region. The bill, led by Representative Carolina Meza , seeks to strengthen sanctions against the illegal exploitation of natural resources and establish a citizen-involved oversight mechanism.

According to Meza, this reform is urgent due to the increase in illegal logging in protected areas and the pressure of tourism on sensitive ecosystems such as mangroves and wetlands .

The proposal also includes partnerships with local universities to integrate real-time monitoring technology, drones, and remote sensors to detect illegal activities.

Environmentalists and civil society organizations such as CEMDA have welcomed this initiative, while tourism development sectors are calling for a review of its scope to avoid impacting investments.

The law is expected to be discussed in committee this week, with a view to being approved before the end of the current legislative period.
