An initiative called "Nuestro Futuro" (Our Future), driven by local leaders in BCS and the Pacific Whale Foundation, seeks to have Mexico recognize whales as "non-human persons" and grant them Rights of Nature. The measure is based on their role as "ecosystem engineers" and their vital contribution to carbon capture.
